Even if they did, would that really be that much worse than tanking the next five years and waiting for the new focus on the draft to pay off?

I'll repeat my prediction. Pujols to Washington.

I could totally see that happening.

My expectations for any Cubs success the rest of the decade is pretty low, especially looking at the current roster. The rotation is a mess, the bull pen isn't much better, and outside of Castro and Barney there is not a lot to get excited about.

Now watching Marmol pitch in a tied game in the ninth against the Cards, expecting him to give up a home run for the loss.

    I just threw up.

I would say that this move is bad as far as getting Albert, since him and Hendry were "friends". If Pujols leaves, then Cardinal fans would be mad at management. If he goes to the Cubs, Pujols becomes the most hated man in the history of St. Louis

They don't have to be that good. They just have to win the NL Central. A big-time bat and two rotation spots, that's all they'd really need.

Not sure he should have been hired to begin with. The new ownership, upon taking over, should have made a total break with the past regime ASAP, because it clearly hadn't paid off. New GM, hopefully not a retread. New manager, also hopefully not a retread. Dump the dead weight and the demon-plagued head cases (ie, Zambrano) and start fresh.

Sorry, but Cubs fans have seen their team win the NL Central in recent years. They want to win the World Series. Building your team just to win the dog-ass NL Central won't accomplish that.

That didn't stop Johnny Damon from bolting the Red Sox for the hated Yankees.

These "rivalries" still mean a lot to fans, but players don't give a shit about them. If the Cubs give him the best deal, being labeled a Benedict Arnold in St. Louis isn't going to stop Pujols from going.

Wait did you just equate Damon to Pujols? Sorry but it is not even on the same level nor close to it. Damon spent all of four seasons with the Red Sox and didn't come up in their system. He was loved by Red Sox fans but Pujols is THE Cardinal. He has a chance to break many of the top records and so far has done it from minors to majors with the Cardinals. If he leaves over money and goes to the Cubs to pursue those records he will indeed be the most hated player in St. Louis ever.

Another less important factor is that St. Louis doesn't get great players all too often. They aren't a big market team. They bring most of their players up through the minors. Red Sox and Yankees tend to just sign great players away from other teams. When you didn't come up in a teams system, and you always have ridiculous talent it just simply doesn't mean as much when one of them leaves for the rival.

You don't have the slightest idea about the Brewers, do you?

Who are the 'others' the Brewers are losing outside of Fielder? And please explain how the Brewers will be going into vintage Marlins mode. Who are they selling off after the season?

The fact is, if/when the Brewers lose Fielder, they're going to use the money they could have spent on him in an effort to extend Greinke and Marcum. They have the rest of their lineup back otherwise.

They're all in for this year, no doubt about it. But to act like they're going to shit all over themselves and sell the farm after this year is ludicrous.
