The two episodes without him were as terrifying as George Bailey's dream sequence after wishing he had never been born.

The writers on the show are what is keeping things going. Remember the episode at the wedding this year, with the different CSI describing the scene in different ways and each description was shot in different ways. Brilliant. Written by Sarah Goldfinger, who co-wrote the finale. The high school love triangle was also extremely well done, creepy and poignant at the same time.
