When I worked for a Rivals site one of the reasons -- not the only one, but it was certainly a factor -- we also put out a magazine was to get around the policy that the SID office didn't credential online only operations.

That was a few years ago and it's sort of an antiquated policy now, but I'm also not sure exactly how they should word the policy to keep any bozo with a computer and a GoDaddy account from claiming they are entitled to credentials.

As for Grantland, why do I have a feeling the Duke SIDs didn't want to take a chance they'd give access to somebody who wound up writing a 10,000-word essay on what a dick Coach K was?

If colleges and universities are issuing blanket denials for media credentials for online publications, they should start with NCAA.com

Granted, this makes it harder for the SIDs to control, because anyone can have a blog or website, but there has to be more thought into it.

Credentials will be issued to websites on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Nevada Media Services Office. Priority will be given to websites that are affiliated with an accredited media outlet. Websites must have editorial, news-gathering content and not merely sponsor message boards, message centers or chat rooms where people are allowed to post anonymous information.

Somewhat interesting. It's a back burner thing though.
