Living or dead, you get two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer and a vocalist. In the interest of staying hip, you can add a DJ or rapper if you think it would work.

This is a completely personal choice, so no degrading other people's picks (I know, I know ... FAIL!).

Here's mine, but keep in mind I'm in my mid-20s, so I'll probably leave out some old-school people.

Drummer: Travis Barker of Blink 182 (Say what you will of the band's music, but he's freaking amazing)
Bass: Flea of Red Hot Chilli Peppers
    Guitar 1: Jimi Hendrix
Guitar 2: Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave
    Vocals: Bradley Nowell of Sublime

If I were to add a rapper: Chali 2Na of Jurassic 5

Okay, I'm doing this based on my favorite musicians and vocalists. Not necessarily who would best play together. Because the styles here are pretty far-flung.

    Guitar - Slash
    Guitar - Pat Metheney
Bass - Cliff Burton (yeah, yeah, there are better bassists, but the poor guy never got to enjoy fame)
Drums - John Theodore (from The Mars Volta...trust me)
Vocals - Claudio Sanchez (or, for the older crowd, Geddy Lee.)

Only if they added Slash as a guitarist, Kurt Cobain as their songwriter and Amy Lee as their vocalist.

Vocals: Paul Rodgers (T-B is right on the money)
Guitars: Steve Vai or Joe Satriani on lead; Derek Trucks as the second guitarist
    Bass: Geddy Lee
    Drummer: Neil Peart

If it's a battle of the bands, the other band could be:

    Vocals: Robert Plant
Guitars: Jeff Beck or Buddy Guy and Robert Cray
Bass: John Paul Jones (can also play keyboards)
Drums: John Bonham or Keith Moon
    Harmonica: James Cotton

Guitars: Erik Melvin, NOFX and Tim Mahoney, 311
    Bass: P-Nut, 311
    Drummer: Travis Barker, Plus 44
Vocals: Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day

Honestly, if I could have five musicians to construct the perfect musical ensemble, I'd just take 311. In my opinion, they've got one of the best drummers, guitarists and bassists playing today.

Lead singer has to be Steve Perry of Journey.
    Eric Clapton can play guitar.
Billy Joel can hit the keys.
Neil Peart is an easy pick on drums.
Geddy Lee can be my bassist, too.
