    The general readership of The New York Times may not include Joe Schmoe at the corner grocery store, but the general readership of The New York Times includes many people who would make your head spin.

    I think what you mean to say is that there is more direct reader interaction for small-town reporters. People around town are more likely to be able to point you out. That does not mean you face more scrutiny. Moreover, that definitely does not mean you face harsher scrutiny.
