I can't say enough about Charlottesville (the town). Fantastic place to live - no matter what you're looking for. And it's not too far from Richmond and DC.

    Good town.

It should be noted that Charlottesville is an expensive place to live given its size.

And this job will probably not pay well in regards to that cost of living.

Do you have to live in C'ville? :)

Not every writer who covers UVA does. You could live a little outside C-ville, like Crozet or Ruckersville. I'm not sure those places are any cheaper though. Richmond is a bit of a haul.

While C-ville is expensive, the amount of culture in that city is amazing given its size. If you're into live music or theater, there are endless options.

I think you can drink beer in your garage in Charlottesville, though.

Living in Crozet or anywhere in Albemarle Co. isn't really going to be any cheaper. Greene County could be an option. It is cheaper and growing pretty fast, but it wouldn't be as convenient as living in Cville proper. There are other surrounding counties -- Fluvanna, Augusta, Louisa, Orange, etc -- but then your getting into probably at least a half-hour commute and could be out in the sticks.

The guys from The Roanoke Times, The Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Washington Post all live closer to their papers than UVa, so the CDP writers have a bit of an advantage in that regard.

The T-D's beat writer used to live in Charlottesville. Not sure if that's still the case with the current writer.

No. He lives in Richmond. The people that used to live in Charlottesville all left in the mid 00s because Groh gave such limited access that it wasn't worthwhile to live there. Practices were closed. All you got was the press conference stuff anyway. As far as I know, the DP folks are the only ones living there. Roanoke and Richmond both commute. Lynchburg, Newport News and Norfolk no longer cover UVa on a regular basis.

  12. Doesn't Lynchburg use the DP's copy? They're in the same chain. As is Richmond.
