The Blue Mountain Eagle, the local news and community information source for remote and scenic Grant County in Eastern Oregon, is seeking a sports and outdoors reporter who can thrive in a rural setting.

The position covers a range of youth and community sports and outdoor recreation, from hunting to horseshoes, as well as natural resources issues. A 3,000-circulation weekly newspaper, the Eagle offers both a respected print publication and a robust online presence.

The Eagle serves a community with traditions rooted in ranching, forestry, the gold rush, and the cowboy life – a world increasingly touched but not yet eclipsed by the modern world’s digital innovations. Applicants shouldn’t expect to find a Starbucks on the corner, but they will find diners where friendly locals gather for coffee, conversation and the chance to check email on their smart phones.

The community is remote, but the backdrop is scenic, featuring the rugged Blue Mountains, the broad John Day Valley, and the undammed John Day River, home to native steelhead runs and nationally recognized habitat recovery efforts. The Eagle has garnered honors in press competitions for its sports coverage, editorials and features, but the best reward for the staff is the connection to its community.

We are seeking an applicant who is energetic, motivated and responsible. Must have an understanding of athletics, and an ability to write clearly and quickly, take photographs, develop sources, get along with members of the community, and work in a team-oriented atmosphere. Experience with Macintosh, Quark, and PhotoShop a plus, but on-the-job training is possible.

We offer a competitive wage, a generous benefit package, and a team office environment with a staff of seven. Benefits include Paid Time Off (PTO), insurances and a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) retirement plan. Send clips, resume and letter of interest to EO Media Group., PO Box 2048, Salem, OR 97308-2048, by fax to 503-371-2935 or e-mail hr@eomediagroup.org.
