Did Joe Cocker even write any of his own songs?

Elton John had two covers that improved on the original: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, and Pinball Wizard

My all-time favorite band, the Grateful Dead, were the masters at covers. They did so many Dylan covers that they actually did a mini-tour with him that produced a so-so live album. They were willing to try anything, even took a stab at Werewolves of London a few times (kind of meh).

But the cover the Dead absolutely owned was Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away. Made it completely their own, then reworked it about five or six times over the course of their career. Toward the end (and at the third Fare Thee Well show in July), they'd play it at the end of the second set as a fadeout, and the audience would keep the refrain going ("you know our love, not fade away") as the callback for the encore.

Not enough people in that band.

Good jam, though. Not as big of a fan of Trucks as some of the other people in his circle, but he's right up there with Joe Bonamassa as a supremely gifted guitarist.

My favorite thing about covers is the weird combinations you'd never expect to find:

I alluded to this one earlier:
