    I'm just pointing out that someone who thinks s/he is applying to The Star-Ledger is mistaken, because very few NJ.com reporters get print bylines. For good or ill, NJ.com is a separate entity with separate management and a separate budget.

    Newhouse set up each of the websites as independent companies for tax purposes back in the mid-90s (or maybe earlier). It used to be that the dot-com losses were essentially a tax shelter against the newspaper profits.

    Maybe now it's working the opposite way.
