And, you don't have to shoot free throws in the NFL.

That Iverson kid wasn't a bad high school player either

Could he physically do it? Sure.

However, there are about 100 million reasons for him not to.

He'd be a Chara like defenseman in the NHL if he could, you know, skate :)

One of my friends, who grew up in Virginia, said the best HS football player he ever saw was Allen Iverson.

Tony Gonzalez is nowhere near the athlete James is and he was pretty damn good at both sports.

Nate Robinson quit football because he knew there was no way he'd ever go pro. No one wants a 5-7 corner with an attitude.

Lots of guys have excelled at both sports. A lot of the quick cuts and post moves from basketball translate well to football.
Gonzalez, Gates and Jimmy Graham were all converted into Pro Bowl caliber tight ends (and in the case of the first two, HOF-caliber players). James, being about the right size and an incredibly gifted athlete, certainly seems like he could at least be a serviceable pro tight end -- especially in today's NFL, where he wouldn't have to worry quite as much about taking a big hit over the middle.

Ronald Curry (North Carolina/Raiders) is another one that comes to mind as playing both sports. Not a huge star, but he's stuck around for a while in the NFL. There was another guy that played for the Raiders a few years back, an offensive lineman named Chad Slaughter, who played low-level D-I basketball in the SWAC.

Nate Rob was a great RB in HS. His pops was one of the best RB's in UW history.

Another NBA player who could have played in the NFL was Eric Snow. His big brother is in the college football Hall of Fame, and will tell you in a heartbeat that Eric was a better football player than he was. George Perles said that it drove him crazy knowing that, for four years, the best defensive back in the Big Ten was sitting in the basketball locker room.

Gates was supposed to be a football player all along - he went to Michigan State on a football scholarship, having gotten agreement from both Nick Saban and Tom Izzo that he could play both sports. Saban, though, changed his mind once Gates was enrolled, so he left school.

Iverson still holds a state record (with three others) with 5 INTs in a single game. From what I've heard, he was unreal. Played both ways and returned kicks. Was the state Player of the Year. Won a state title.

Still one of my favorite athletes of all time.

Why would any NBA player, let alone James, want to play football?
