If we're going to speculate about brain injuries, and his mental health, we'd be remiss to ignore football's contribution.

The other thing that bugs me about it, is that it immediately changes the focus on what happened and the tragedy and turns it into a "hot button" issue. The thing happened Saturday, couldn't we wait a few days before taking that kind of leap?

    2nd order issue, I agree.

The 21st century reading of the Second Amendment, granting an individual right to bear arms, is as much a perversion of the original intent of the framers as the "right to privacy" interpretation that led to Roe v. Wade.

Gun rights may even be good policy. I personally don't think so, but many make the case. But to hide behind 18th century white property owners to legitimize said rights is laughable.

    If not now, when?

That's the flip side of the argument.

That's the attitude every time there's a mass killing. And when we're all being cautioned not to talk about gun control, states process new gun permits in record numbers.

Not that this incident is going to lead to a run on firearms ... but when is the right time to discuss whether guns are too prevalent? When nobody is paying attention?

We're not going to settle this here, but...

There's an actual Amendment regarding gun rights. They even put it pretty near the top of the list. They didn't do that with the "right to privacy".

There is a process to overturn the 2nd Amendment. It hasn't been acted on, because there is broad support for the 2nd Amendment. And, the fact is, the reason for the 2nd Amendment is still as relevant as ever. The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or "sports". The 2nd Amendment is meant to prevent a totalitarian government.

Despots the world over are grateful their subjects do not possess firearms.

For 18th century militias. The amendment is a complete anachronism.

Kudos to the NRA and the right for its decades long, successful PR campaign. But the idea that the framers, lionized by the right, had today's interpretation of the Second Amendment in mind, is absurd. And yet there Tea Partiers are, dressing up like Alexander Hamilton and James Madison at every gun party they throw. Again: Laughable. And laughable, then, that the right would rage about judicial activists out of the other side of their mouth.

But, at the same time, with a sigh, good on them.

Always fun to read horseshit defenses of handguns.

What happened was a person killed another person with a gun, then killed themselves with it. The gun's a big star in the tragedy. Leading role.
