The Quincy Herald-Whig, a 23,000-circulation daily newspaper in West-Central Illinois, is seeking a copy editor/page designer for our universal desk whose primary responsibility would be sports. The editor also will have some news page assignments, with news assignments primarily in the summer months. The overall job breakdown is about 85 percent sports work, 15 percent news. We're looking for someone with energy who enjoys the challenge of taking a role in all operations on the copy desk. Good editing and headline writing skills are a must. Experience in Quark XPress is recommended.

Prior daily newspaper experience is preferred, but we will consider recent graduates.

We're heavy into local sports and cover more than 40 high schools in Illinois and Missouri as well as four colleges. We also hit Western Illinois University, a Division I school about an hour away in Macomb. Quincy is a town of just over 40,000 on the banks of the Mississippi River in West-Central Illinois, about two hours north of St. Louis. The Herald-Whig is an afternoon paper Monday through Friday and publishes morning editions Saturday and Sunday. It is a family-owned newspaper, offers profit sharing, a 401(k), a flex plan and health, dental, life and disability insurance. The Herald-Whig is an equal opportunity employer.

Send a cover letter, resume and clips to: Sports Editor Don O'Brien at dobrien(at)whig.com or by regular mail to: Quincy Herald-Whig, 130 S. Fifth, Quincy, Ill. 62301. For more information contact, O'Brien or copy desk chief Gerri Berendzen at gberendzen(at)whig.com; or call (217) 223-5100.
