Far worse places to work. I hear these folks treat their people right.

    From the ACES listserv:

The Herald News, a 30,000 daily located 15 miles from Times Square in
gritty, newsy Passaic County, NJ, has an opening for a full-time sports
copy editor. We prefer candidates with at least a year of daily sports
copy editing and design experience. Quark Xpress experience is a must
and several years of daily newspaper reporting experience is preferred.
The job involves night and weekend hours. Those interested in applying
should send a cover letter, resume and your five best work samples to
Jeff Roberts, Sports Editor, Herald News, 1 Garret Mountain Plaza, P.O.
Box 471, West Paterson, NJ 07424. If you have questions, email
    robertsj@northjersey.com.

About the Herald News: We're a family-owned newspaper that draws very
talented journalists; our sister flagship paper is The Record of Bergen
County. We also have 60 weeklies and magazines as part of our company,
North Jersey Media Group. The Herald News has won the New Jersey Press
Association's general excellence award four times in the last five
years as best the daily newspaper for circulation 60,000 and under.

I interviewed for a job on the news desk here about a year ago, but they instituted a hiring freeze shortly thereafter, and I ended up elsewhere. Certainly seemed like a good place to be, professionally, although Paterson's...well, gritty is putting it nicely. As of a year ago, they were using Quark 4 on Dells, which leaves something to be desired. But because the company that owns them also owns the Record, they have a staff far bigger than they might otherwise have.

I don't know the area a lick, but is "gritty" really the best way to describe a place to work?

There aren't many good options in New Jersey. You can do far worse.

Noted for the sake of the curious: this is NOT a JRC paper.

    ::) ::)

  7. "Camden" isn't in Camden ... the Courier-Post is in middle-class Cherry Hill.

and Atlantic City isn't in Atlantic City, for that matter - the Press is in Pleasantville

    Pleasantville is worse than AC.

both Trenton papers are located ... in Trenton. The Trentonian right next door to the police station and The Times a block away by the ramp for Route 1. Although the police station is right there, gritty might be the right word to describe this part of town.

Asbury Park Press isn't in Asbury Park.

It's in the seventh circle of Hell.

I thought Asbury Park itself was the seventh circle of hell and the location they were in just off the Parkway in Neptune wasn't that bad.

And by gritty, another shooting in town tonight. And so it goes ...

Now, this state police sex story -- 5 troopers, one drunk woman, 6 hours of "consensual" sex -- is becoming hotter by the minute.
