  1. STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

    Responsible for the editing of both wire and locally produced news and features copy and copy for our online product and multimedia items, writing headlines and designing pages. Should possess a working knowledge of the Associated Press style book, both InDesign and InCopy page production software and be able to work under deadline pressure. Will also be trained in updating Lubbockonline.com. Will work primarily in the late afternoons and nights and on weekends.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
     Must be accurate with copy editing, spelling and headline writing.
     College degree or five years of experience in similar position.
     Must be competent in working in InDesign and InCopy and any other technology systems implemented by the newspaper relating to the job. Knowledge of Photoshop is a plus. They will need some online experience for website training and SEO headline writing.
     Be able to think outside the box in regard to headline writing and page design. Refer to sources available for improving work skills, such as online courses through the Morris Learning Center and checking page designs of other newspapers.
     Must be honest, trustworthy and objective in dealing with sources, readers, the public, staff and supervisors.
     Must be able to take either a wire or local story and edit it to fit a desired news hole without compromising the tone or important facts of a story. Also must be able to write clear, concise headlines that mean something to the reader. Also must be able to make adjustments in page design as developing news warrants. Must be willing to proof pages handled by co-workers. Must be able to recast headlines for SEO on the website and make updates. Work hours can vary depending on the duties of the day, starting anywhere from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and ending the shift anywhere from 10:00 p.m. to midnight. We are a seven day a week operation, which means weekend duty is also necessary.
     Must be able to work independently, but also must communicate problems to supervisors.


    THE DUTIES OF THE JOB ARE:
    • Edit news, sports, features and online copy as needed.
    • Write headlines for stories for both print and online (including SEO headlines).
    • Design pages for news, features, sports, and special sections.
    • Proof read various pages as needed.
    • Watch news wires for developing stories or those of interest to our readers.
    • Capture and edit advance wire copy and photos as requested by other department editors.
    • Edit for multimedia platforms.
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors.


    WORKING CONDITIONS: Working in a large department within separate work space.
