They were saying on CNN that he black box would also reveal details as to what was going on in the cockpit and what was going on with the controls.

I don't think the cockpit chatter would be able to be captured without one. That's usually essential in the investigations, obviously.

I believe they also house in-flight data, how systems on the plane were operating at the time, etc.

Don't we have the technology to monitor those from the ground, too? Satellites are powerful things.

I fly Continental in and out of Buffalo, but I always connect through Cleveland precisely because I want to avoid a.) Newark and b.) turboprops.

Don't think that will change any time soon.

UPDATE: N.Y. state police confirm no survivors.

No. Black boxes record all the in-cabin audio, not just what goes out over the radio, and also get a lot of data from the airplane systems.

Better to have it recorded on board than try to rely on transmission to an outside source.

OK, AP, I hate being that guy and all ... but need a little more than 4.2 inches at 9:50 here. Just blew up my nation page for this, and the clock's ticking.

I still don't understand why we can't monitor those from the ground. I know you're aware of my small brainpower, but I don't understand why we still need the black box with modern technology.

Like all those hospitals waiting for the injured to come in on 9-11, until they figured out there weren't going to be many.
