I was wondering when someone was going to spring up this idea.

    And I'm somewhat surprised it's a Republican.

  2. I'm not surprised at all.

Believe it or not, a lot of Republicans have a real problem with China in this regard.

Plus ... well, it still is a communist, totalitarian nation.

I guess my surprise stems from the willingness to look past that when it comes to trade issues. Personally I think there's far too much ignored about their human rights violations.

  4. Agreed. Business doesn't trump that, IMHO.

Sadly it does. It shouldn't, but it does.

    . . . and it's a very sad way-of-the-world signpost that it does.

    Be afraid.

I think it would be a wee bit hypocritical to make a big stink about the Olympics while at the same time saying nothing about the day-to-day investments of our economy in theirs and theirs in ours.

Try to go a year without buying a product made in China.

First and foremost, there will be no boycott. Not only would that result in an international incident with our largest financier but it would put another spotlight back on us.

“Why aren’t you going to China?”
    “Human rights violations.”
    “Interesting. <cough, cough> Abu Graib <cough, cough> Gitmo <cough, cough> secret prisons <cough, cough> torture memo <cough, cough>.”

Our problem is that we used to be able to point and say “Look at what you are doing.” But right now, we have four other fingers pointing back at us.

Oh, and China would just yank their money out of our economy thus nearly turning us into a third world nation.

This idea worked well in 1980...

Finally, Dana Rohrabacher and Maxine Waters have found an issue on which they agree.

I thought the proposed boycott was because the Chinese have made the gold, silver and bronze medals out of lead.

    I'm all for it...

Not for the same reasons as him, I just don't want to have to watch bad TV for three weeks... ;D
