Computer help

In my lower right toolbar, today I found a little red circle with a white X. When I put my cursor on it, it says "Your computer is infected."
About every 30 seconds, I hear a little "pop" which I assume is connected to this lovely little virus.
I ran my Norton anti virus and it came up clean.
If my laptop is indeed infected, any suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Norton bad. AVG Free good.

As powerful as Norton --- maybe more --- but without the upfront retail payout. Never had a problem with it.

Easy fix, though ... appears to be Spysheriff.

Agree completely. AVG is very good. Our resident computer expert, Rosie, also has recommended it.

I had Norton for six months because it came with the computer, but I also used AVG. AVG caught stuff that Norton did not.
