OK, I've sunk the coin into a new machine, so here's my next question:

What do I need to take off this thing -- it came with Windows Vista installed -- and how do I do it?

I swear, I'm not a total moron, I just play one on this board...

Zeke, what are you looking to do?

Do you want files from the old hard drive? Do you want add the old hard drive to the new PC?

OK, don't get rid of the old machine just yet. I recently had this happen but my problem wasn't the hard drive, so I was able to extract the old hard drive, encase it in a USB setup and then plug it into the new computer just like a gigantic flash drive. All my files and applications were right where I had left them.

This isn't difficult (do a web search for the make and model of your computer and you should be able to find internet directions) and the enclosure will cost you about $20, but if you're not comfortable cracking open your computer, get a techie friend to do it.

Eventually I'll get to the old hard drive: Right now I just want to know how much of the crap that came on this machine I need and what I can junk to free up space...

Thanks for the advice, Cadet. I think I'll do that eventually.

Oh. In that case, just open up Add/Remove Programs and delete what you don't want. Not all machines come loaded with the same software. This is more a preferential issue.
