    A sweet, sweet gig:

    Date posted: 6/24/2006
    Newspaper: Austin American-Statesman
    Job listing: Sports Columnist
    Contact
    (e-mail): John Bridges, Sports Editor
    jbridges@statesman.com
    Phone number: (512) 912-2952
Information: The Austin American-Statesman (185,000 daily / 240,000 Sunday) seeks a general sports columnist. For years, we've had only one (Kirk Bohls); now, we'll have two.

We want someone who can skewer 'em and humor 'em with a single word – OK, maybe two. Demonstrated proficiency as a writer and as a reporter is a must. At least five years of experience covering college and/or pro-level beats required.

This is a great opportunity for the nation's next great sports voice. If that's you, contact Sports Editor John Bridges at jbridges@statesman.com, by phone at (512) 912-2952 or mail at:

Good paper. Good city. You may not be the top dog doing a lot of Texas stuff, but there is a lot of other things to pontificate about.

A paper adding a columnist -- not just filling an opening? That's super.

Ace, Grizz be forewarned. The Statesman is a Cox newspaper. While the chain is solid, adding payroll isn't its MO. I'll believe it when I see it. I just hope Bridges isn't doing a little expedition just to see who is out there to prepare for future openings.

This is not a new position. This opening was created when Olin Buchanan left several months ago. They have been trying to decide what to do with that spot since then, and apparently have decided they need another columnist more than another college writer.

In case you're wondering, Olin left to become the senior national football writer for Rivals.com.

  12. Olin's interview with Jonathon Moxon is a classic piece of sports journalism.
