Maybe a new guerrilla marketing tactic?

  2. I keep hearing the myth several people look over a page before it is sent to press. Another myth busted.

It was a late game (especially for papers in EDT), so I'm guessing the page was "read" like this:

Story ends. Elway spelled correctly. No "shit" or "fuck" in 60-point type.

    Send it!

By far, this situation is worse. Damn, someone who gives more than two shits about the Denver Post should buy it and beef it back up. That's insane to not extend your deadline for a football game, much less the Broncos season opener and a rematch with the Ravens.

Dan Reeves would have murdered Elway before he'd ever let him throw 7 TDs.

Weese would have fit the space.

The Gray Ghost is thrilled beyond belief and already has dialed Cake and Babsie.

The Post's fuckup is far worse.

For something like this, you chase the paper no matter how late it goes.

Back around 1997, I worked at a paper where, with the exception of gamers than came in on deadline, every story that was in the paper was read by three or four different people and then two more different ones on a proof before deadline.

These days if you get a full read before going up on the web it's probably rare.
