The Columbus Dispatch is the No. 1 source of information in central Ohio and the only daily newspaper serving all of the Columbus, Ohio, metropolitan market. We are seeking a Sports Reporter to collect and analyze newsworthy sporting events and write news stories covering the Columbus Blue Jackets and professional hockey.

The ideal candidate will be a veteran hockey writer who can cover the beat with precision and flair including video and podcasts, radio and TV appearances. They should have demonstrated job skills, the ability to communicate both orally and in writing; be able to deal effectively with the public in complex situations; have ability to conduct interviews, complete research, and organize information and materials. Must have the ability to develop and utilize contacts in the community, work well under pressure and meet daily deadlines. Prefer a minimum of 3 years' experience reporting on a daily newspaper other than a college publication.

Curious to see who lands this. Aaron Portzline was dynamite and is now with The Athletic. And Portzline is staying in Lumbus to cover the Jackets, so that's automatically a challenge.

    Also the Gatehouse factor.

But this is a big NHL gig.

You are quite correct. This is the second time they have posted the listing since Aaron left almost six weeks ago. They are looking for someone with previous NHL experience at a major daily paper.

Master of the obvious here but guessing first round of applicants less than stellar. Thus the need to repost.

Surprised no one has contacted Harvey Fialkov. He'd be a natural at this job (and no, I'm NOT Harvey) but wondered if he'd want to move.

Never heard of him, but there are three NHL reporter jobs open right now, so maybe someone will pick him up.

This job is still on The Dispatch's job board, and opening night is three weeks away. The paper's Ohio State men's basketball writer, Adam Jardy, has been filling in until they find someone. Get those applications in.

The job is STILL listed on The Dispatch's career board and the first preseason game is tonight. Time to get those applications in.

Guess they're being picky. Their right. After all, look who they've had for the past 16 seasons.

"Why hire someone until a week before the season starts?" That may be GateHouse's thinking. Save another few grand between salary and skipped preseason travel, of course. I wouldn't be surprised if this type of edict were coming from corporate.

Portzline really did a lot for their Jackets coverage and is staying in Columbus to drive all the subscribers in The Athletic's direction. My strong assumption is they are looking for someone who has several years experience as the No. 2 beat writer in a major market covering a big-time NHL team. Trouble is both the Denver Post and Star Tribune are looking for new NHL writers as well. Not to mention that The Athletic appears to be expanding to cover all 31 teams. It's a writer's market right now.
