This is the single most overrated thing in all of sports. Players, if they want to keep playing, don't willingly train their replacements. And players, if they want to win the job, don't take advice from their competition. People point to the Favre/Rodgers setup as some kind of validation of the vet-youngster phenomenon, but in reality Rodgers wasted two, maybe three years on the bench.

Speaking for the Colts fanboi loosers, I don't think Luck is going to get grief for "pushing" Manning out. It's not like Manning was gangbusters, or merely OK, last season, and the Colts just decided Manning was too old. The guy hasn't thrown a pass in anger since the 2010 playoffs. Manning has had -- well, how many surgeries now? As I've said, if Manning could throw, the Colts would not only be shopping that first pick, but they also wouldn't have dumped so many coaches, front-office staff and others overboard.

This day is sad for us Colts fanboi loosers for many reasons. One is simply that we will never see perhaps the greatest quarterback the game has known ever throw again in a Colts uni. (We can debate whether he's the greatest, but the Colts' collapse without him sure makes a case.) Another is how it ended -- with Manning suddenly disappearing. Another is realizing his effect not only on the Colts, but also on the city of Indianapolis and state of Indiana. The guy has a children's hospital named after him, for fuck's sake. When Manning arrived, as he told Letterman, it was "car racin' and basketball," but he made the Colts a draw, made football a legit sport in Indiana (to play as well as to watch), and his success got Lucas Oil Stadium built and, thus, the Super Bowl to Indianapolis. He's been heavily involved in the community.

On the other hand, we also know that Manning probably isn't Manning anymore. By dumb Luck, pun intended, the Colts have a chance to find a legit replacement, even if he can't be, could never be, Manning. What are the Colts supposed to do? Let Painter play again while they guess whether Manning can ever throw?

Unfortunately, most of the greats don't end like Elway, winning two straight Super Bowls. It ends with Montana in a Chiefs uniform, Unitas in a Chargers uniform, Favre creating drama over whether he'll play (and who he'll play for)... the list goes on. As a fanboi looser, I hope Luck does well -- but I'm not going to expect Manning II. That'll never happen, for reasons off-the-field as well as on.

Now Indy needs to prove it takes the next logical step as a pro sports town and support its franchise without an iconic player as its front man. Still an open question for me.

Now, you have to wonder who's going to take the risk to sign Manning, who, after three or whatever neck surgeries, and who turns 36 in three weeks, is merely just a rental option for some desperate team for 3-4 years.

Got to figure it'll be a race between KC, Oakland or even Tennessee.

I'll still support the Colts, but you have to wonder how that season-ticket list looks right about now. I suspect tickets will be easy to come by for a few years.

I also think Jim Irsay just may have become the most hated man in all of Indianapolis to some people. But that's just me.

Look how hated Ted Thompson was when he pushed Favre out the door. Three years later they won the Super Bowl.

The Colts need to be very active in free agency over the next two years. If they are, and Luck is half as good as people think, the Colts will be fine.

Will there be a wave of retirements or free agent departures among the other old Colts? A rookie QB's learning curve is kind of tough on wideouts and blockers, too. Please note, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's just the wheel of change.
I believe it would be in Manning's best interest to just retire, but Hall of Famers aren't built that way. He'll have to fail in action before he considers it.

I expect Jeff Saturday will either retire or go with Manning to whatever team is next. The rest of the line is due for a makeover anyway, whether Peyton came back or not. I also can't see both Wayne and Garcon returning in free agency. Probably neither. So yeah, I think you'll see a couple of retirements and several free agent departures.
