Wow, that's a big fall from the team knocked off undefeated Houston in the C-USA championship game last December and went to a bowl before the coach bolted.

RE: WSU and Leach. Yeah, they'll sneak up on some people and be decent. Maybe not this year, but within 2-3 years. Might be sort of like they were under Price: alternating good and bad seasons. I don't know if they have the resources to compete with Oregon, Stanford, Washington or the rest of the Pac-12 North year in year out, but Leach will put in a gimmick sort of offense they can win with even without having superior size or speed.

Yeah, I didn't realize Southern Miss was that bad. What caused them to fall so far, so fast? Their coach left to go to North Carolina or someplace else, right? What else happened besides that?

They also had a ton of seniors last year (including a 4-year starting QB) and have had a couple of mediocre recruiting classes in a row (freshman QB Anthony Alford notwithstanding).

The high school football in Mississippi has been pretty weak lately, and now Mississippi State and Ole Miss both have young, dynamic coaches who can recruit. USM's answer was 60-year-old career defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

USM's offensive coordinator (Steve Buckley) was a high school coach last year. Their defensive coordinator is Tommy West.

USM has for years stolen second-tier players from Louisiana and southern Alabama. But with Mark Hudspeth at ULL now and Joey Jones at South Alabama, they're not getting those guys like they used to.

    So there you go ...
