OK, so does that work in reverse, too? If Alabama blows out Auburn and barely edges Missouri, then Missouri gets the higher bowl?

Somewhat interesting game tonight with Georgia Tech playing at Clemson.

Ga. Tech needs a win to finish with a 6-2 conference record and a shot at the ACC title game, depending on whom they end up tied with (beat Duke, lost to Miami and Va. Tech, each with two conference losses and more games to play).

Clemson needs to win its last three to have a shot at a BCS at-large bid. 11-1 should be good enough. 10-2 probably not, in part because the stink from the Florida State loss was so heavy.

    I would think so.

Yeah, that was me. After going back and really looking at it, though, Fedora's recruiting in 2010 and 2011 (his last two years) wasn't as bad a previously thought. Those classes were rated at the time about average for a Southern Miss team, a few three stars and a lot of the "diamonds in the rough," that Jeff Bower consistently won 7-8 games a year with.

A lot of those left in the wake of the 2012 disaster (either by choice or were run off), injuries have decimated many of the rest and the ones that are left haven't panned out for whatever reason.

Right now, Southern is basically a glorified juco. In fact, there are a lot of people in these parts who believe that East Mississippi, the No. 2-ranked team in NJCAA which is averaging 63 points and 611 yards of offense a game, could beat USM. Not sure if I necessarily agree, but that is one talent-bereft football team they're putting on the field in Hattiesburg.

EMCC definitely has more D-I linemen than USM has.

Today is the 43rd anniversary of the Marshall football plane crash and the Thundering Herd are playing at Tulsa.

This is the first time since that accident that MU has played a road game on the day of the crash. They're wearing "75" on one side of their helmets in memory of the 75 people killed in the crash.

Clemson throttles Georgia Tech 55-31 (wasn't really even that close). Tajh Boyd throws four more TD passes to become the ACC career leader.

Really tough team to get a read on for me. They love to beat the snot out of the little guys, but laid a colossal egg against Florida State that could keep them out of a BCS bowl even at 11-1. The game at South Carolina in two weeks will go a long way toward deciding that.

Also, keep an eye on what happens in the Big XII. If Baylor finishes with one loss, but that loss (either to OSU or Texas) ends up costing them the Big XII title, does Baylor get an at large BCS bid ahead of Clemson, taking two teams from the Big XII instead of the ACC?

Not an unreasonable scenario for Ohio State to lose in the B1G championship, and being dropped into the same 1 loss BCS pool.

Yeah, everyone who thinks Ohio State is just going to skate to the Big Ten title isn't paying attention to how good Michigan State is on defense. They are allowing 210 yards per game, and 1.62 yards per rush. That's outstanding in any league.

Yeah, Sparty lost to Notre Dame, but there were several questionable pass interference calls that went against them, one that basically handed the Irish a touchdown.

MSU also allowed 28 points to Indiana, but two of those TDs came after turnovers in Spartan territory. They've basically dominated everyone else.

Michigan State will be challenged at Nebraska on Saturday and at home against Minnesota in two weeks, but they should finish 10-1. That would make the Big Ten title game a doozy.

Steak, I agree 100%. Has the potential to be quite a matchup. While it's impossible to accurately match full season stats (due to Braxton Miller & Carlos Hyde both missing 3 games), Ohio State would be the best offense Michigan State would see. By leaps and bounds.

Unfortunately, the old "Sparty be Sparty" scenario (where they get a half dozen personal fouls, turn the ball over another half dozen times & lose to Minny by three scores) is NEVER out of the question.....

People are sleeping hard on Michigan State. That defense is downright nasty. I'll be into the Ohio State-Michigan State game, if it happens.

From whenever we were talking about academic standards -- two researchers looked at Cal's admissions and found that athletes are getting in with a C average in high school and test scores averaging 1,110 (that's 370 in each section).
