I don't think its a coincidence that without a strong independent like Notre Dame, Penn State or Miami to fill the at-large spots, most bowls weren't that great. All of the top teams from top conferences were tied to specific bowls.
Try to think of a great pre-BCS bowl game match-up that didn't feature at least one independent. Hell the Fiesta Bowl matching then independents Penn State and Miami was the precursor to the BCS.

That was the game of the century where they made the radical (at the time) decision to move the game to (gasp!) Jan. 2.

To answer your thread topic question: Worse.
    A playoff is in order.
16 teams, incorporate the bowls, easy as pie.
Season doesn't have to be any longer, and could actually start a week later if so desired by collegiate organizers.
Forget the bye weeks unless each school can somehow incorporate them on their own.

That was the best part about bowl season. Now, teams in the championship game get 100 days off before they meet for "all the Tostitos."

Remember when making the playoffs in a pro sport was an accomplishment?

Remember when passing for 300 yards in the NFL was a huge accomplishment for any quarterback?

Remember when coming to the net was a smart thing for a tennis player to do?

Remember when World Series games took less than 3 hours?

Stuff changes, and, depending on your perspective, not always for the better.
