Live sports is the reason people watch ESPN. There's more cable live sports competition now, and without the bowl games, what's to compete with the NHL on NBCSports or the NBA on TNT on the nights ESPN doesn't have it? There's college basketball, but in December that gets lower ratings than 30 for 30. Football draws eyeballs, so it's worth it.

I wonder if the sport will survive it.

A lower-tier bowl game will often get a rating between 2.5 and 3.5 (or more), which would definitely outdo a rerun by a long shot.

I mean, maybe ESPN continues to pump money into Bowl Month because it just wants to lose money. Would seem to be bad business, though.

I believe that eventually ESPN will make the schools blow up the automatic conference finish slotting for these games and make matchups the way TV made fights in the early '50s.

Those costs are starting to go down a little bit. ESPN will have some of their talent calling select bowl games from Bristol this year. They've been doing that with some of the midweek MAC games already.

Picks for the next few days:

    Indiana -6.5
    Tulsa -7
    Rutgers Pk
    Louisville -4
    Nebraska +1

A parlay that I really like:
    Wisconsin -2.5
    Northwestern -3.5

    Parlay #2:
    Ohio State Pk
    West Virginia -14

Also a 3-teamer... take Western Kentucky money line, Toledo money line and Akron -11.

    Good luck!

The bigger joke is schools awarding bowl bonuses to coaches for a .500 season. It's been shown that pretty much all bowl games pre-New Years are money losers for the schools. The bonuses don't help.

Bowls trump 30 for 30 or similar programs because live sports are one of the last things people watch, well, live. And enough of them stick with the commercials to make it a jackpot for advertisers in the DVR/streaming age.

Several times a year, Mrs. Whitman begins concocting Sunday morning plans.

"Can't you just DVR the Bears?"

    "No."

The counterpoint to that is Alabama going to the Sugar and Cotton Bowls, both traditional New Year's Day big bowls, and getting stomped because they "weren't all that motivated" since they were not in the big game.

Alabama hasn't been to the Cotton Bowl since 2005. Interestingly enough, its last three postseason losses — 2008 vs. Utah, 2013 vs. Oklahoma and last year vs. Ohio State — all came in the Sugar Bowl.
