Tough going into the final year of a contract with a winning pct of under 30 pct. Says a lot about San Jose State's resources they they would rather play out the string under a lame duck coach than pay him off and bring in someone new.

If Cal is in a rough position due to funding cutbacks and a high cost of living, how utterly screwed is SJSU, which doesn't have a tenth of the support or tradition of the Golden Bears?

The timing is crappy, obviously. Would not surprise me at all to see the interim coach get the gig all season while the search continues.

Seems like it's the usual borderline chaos in San Jose. New football coach hired over the winter and new AD (well, appointing the interim AD, who'd been with the department a long time) hired in spring. They're in the midst of an ambitious facility upgrade that'll include new facilities for baseball, softball, soccer and beach volleyball and a training/office complex. Already in business is an on-campus golf practice facility that's drawn raves from one-time Spartan golfer Roger Maltbie. And next spring, it's the return of the storied men's track and field program after almost 30 years.
