College athletes of the US, unite! UPDATE: NCAA passes four reforms

Over 300 football and men's basketball players have signed a petition, seeking some of that $775 million TV money to add onto the scholarships, and to put into a "lockbox" for when they graduate:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=AvjXUghV4by4DKbDeTWTD0k5nYcB?slug=ap-ncaa-athletesrights

And Yahoo's Dan Wetzel calls for a boycott of a minor bowl game to shake things up:

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news;_ylt=AmdhYKq1BlLzbZg_vyYvLGk5nYcB?slug=dw-wetzel_bowl_boycott_would_shock_system102411

And meanwhile, Mark Emmert proposes to allow schools to give up to $2K to athletes, optionally:

Changes are on the horizon, alright. It'll be interesting to see if the NCAA's proposal is too little, too late. The athletes are awake now.

And on a side note with Wetzel's column, there was a near-boycott of a bowl in the early 60s. According to Dave Meggyesy in "Out of Their League", Syracuse wasn't going to play in the Liberty Bowl because they weren't going to receive anything while the coaches were going to receive watches. They threatened to boycott, and they got their watches too.

Don't know how many people have to hear this to understand it: the day the NCAA decides it will pay athletes from revenue-producing sports (and it will never happen) is the day the Title IX lawyers will start raking in the fees. Because there will be lawsuits from coast to coast for the water polo, volleyball and gymnastics athletes to get paid. And they'll win.

Have a football playoff, which you figure, would generate another $700 million in revenue, at least. Divide that $700 mill by the 350,000 NCAA athletes to give them $2 grand each, then allow athletes to generate whatever private ancillary income they can earn with autograph signings, sneaker endorsements, Playboy poses.

    Two problems solved.

The money-making schools will probably leave the NCAA and form their own organization before any of this happens.

I think a boycott of a minor bowl game, or several of them for that matter, is something we could all get behind.

Didn't UConn's fans boycott their last bowl game?

I don't think you're gonna get MAC and Sun Belt teams to give up their national TV opportunity. And I'm not going to be Norma Rae holding up a sign for individuals who gets six figures in financial compensation and intangblel-but-big-ole networking and esteem compensation.

Unless you consider the fact those teams lose money in those bowl game appearances.

So ... it's not going to happen. A lot of hot air and wasted news space about something that isn't going to come to pass.

Yeah - so the players will actually be doing their fans and state taxpayers a favor by boycotting a smaller bowl - they won't take as much of a hit.
I'd choose the Independence Bowl (kinda symbolic) - it's usually two teams from power conferences who had disappointing seasons - and it isn't like there will be a shortage of bowl games in Louisiana this year.

Then the programs would be left to do the rest of their budgets on ticket and hot dog sales?
