Colin Cowherd a "spoiled little ****head."

I know I'll take shots here but Cowherd is the only choice on ESPN Radio or really any national sports radio choice for me.

Mike & Mike shy away from controversy on any subject. They are the "house" show and will shill for anything from Subway to Tabasco sauce.

Van Pelt is afraid to take strong stands and is too busy name dropping college bars...as a 40 year old man. I do love it, however, when he shifts dialects when interview a subject who happens to be an African-American.

Dan Patrick can't carry a show without his yes-men, Reggie Miller or the endless name dropping.

I like Cowherd because his "act" aims for my demo - I'm a busy guy who is into the "big issues" of sports. I could care less about breaking down a game. I'll pop in and listen for 20 minutes here and there. He'll talk girls, cars, real estate, running a business as well as sports. I'll take that over listening to some 10 minute interview on Van Pelt with a Georgia Tech running back.

EDIT: Just read the Taibbi bit.

Yes, a handful of people in life "bring in money" to a business. Limbaugh, Simon Cowell (there's a reason he went LAST on the comments), Drew Brees & Tom Brady in the NFL. People tune in or watch FOR THEM. They are legitimate stars in their respective fields. When Limbaugh is on vacation, his audience probably goes down 70%. When Brees or Brady are injured, productivity goes down. Let's see what Idol will be without Cowell.

I'm more shocked Taibbi actually believes the stuff he is writing here. Most unions I've been associated with do exactly what Cowherd spells out - protect the lazy, untalented and mediocre -- not exactly traits that get you into the NFL.

Then you need to associate with more unions, because over the years they have offered exactly the kind of protection that Taibbi is writing about.

Because in the cosmos of sports radio programs, his is in the upper echelon - - cf JT The Brick, Stephen A. Smith, 2 Live Stews, Petros Papadakis, Doug Gotlieb just to name a few programs off the top of my head.

Cowherd is hardly Edward R. Murrow but given "the competition", his views and his topics can actually make the listener think once in a while...

emh is right. Union power has been dwindling over the years for two reasons — the one spelled out above and the fact that the leadership is often at odds politically with the rank and file.

So he's the World's Tallest Midget.

The few times I've tried to listen to him the only thing he's made me think is that he's annoying as hell to listen to and does not seem to possess the ability to come up with an original thought.

I have no problem with Cowherd. Ya, he's a self-important asshole. So would most people be if given a microphone and lots of cash. I just wish ESPN would stop running that God-awful "Mrs. Doubtfire" promo on his show 14 times a day.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

If I have to listen to sports radio and all I have to listen to are "midgets"; then indeed, I will choose to listen to the tallest of the midgets and those closest to his height.

He is far from the one eyed man. The only ones nearly as bad as he is (that we get here in the NY area) is SAS, and Kusilius, who is a less successful version of Cowherd. If the word smarmy didn't exist, I would coin it for these two.

Is there some other kind of history?

Union power has also dwindled over the years for a third reason: The rise of the middle class.

Until roughly 100 years ago, unions were demonized by the vast majority of Americans as un-American socialists who wanted to steal from the poor old robber barons who could pay off any cop or politician to make sure that their way of doing things remained the same.

Then in the 1910s came some highly-publicized incidents that made Americans think that maybe this union idea wasn't so bad. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The Ludlow Massacre. Unions started gaining more acceptance, and when the Depression hit, were seen as one of the few things that could help the working class.

Then after WWII, the new middle class arose, thanks to fair wages and benefits, and companies that were willing to value their workers, rather than just exploit them.

But with the new prosperity, the middle class began to take their lifestyle for granted. No longer were working conditions seen as a major issue, since they were working in offices. They had their 40-hour workweeks, with weekends and vacation time, and the gold watch and pension waiting for them when they retired.

And when unions for the lower-middle class would go on strike for better pay and conditions, the middle class would, rather than support them, complain about being inconvenienced. This apathy, plus the increased competition for jobs overseas, has helped doom unions.

I did like Cowherd's line the other day about the fans not being interested in the players/owners problems. He said thousandaires don't want to hear millionaires complain they aren't being paid enough by billionaires. Just shut up and play.

    That's a pretty good point.
