CNN Fat Kid Story: A classic hang 'em out to dry.

Don't know how I missed this thread. Yes, it is abuse. The kid doesn't know any better. And that is extremely unhealthy. It's also not isolated. In just the last two decades, the number of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has doubled and it has tripled for teenagers. Obesity nationwide is a huge problem. It's sad because 1) the kids don't have the capacity to make good decisions for themselves, and 2) they are being set up with habits that will make it that much harder to live healthy adult lifestyles. There is also the problem that societally we are already paying a cost for this, in the form of health care costs that are going through the roof in large part because of the prevalence of Type II diabetes, heart disease and a host of other problems caused by obesity.

As for taking the kid away from the mom, I'd be all for it. But the reality is that he won't be any better off in an overtaxed public system that will neglect him just as badly or worse
