So killing 300 civilians along with bin Laden would have been OK?

At the time, it would have been viewed as definitely "not OK." Joe Six-Pack had no idea who bin Laden was (and neither did BTExpress).

Knowing what we know now, it would have been a good idea. A good idea, however, that likely NEVER would have been judged as such (because what followed would not have happened as it did).
