The 2 p.m. announcement was a mandatory evacuation. The 4 p.m. announcement said the same thing. We packed up a few things and took off. The grandparents of my daughter's boyfriend welcomed us with a fine dinner and conversation. We could have stayed the night, but about 9:30 it wasn't as windy, so we came home. Wind is the only danger we face, but it seems to be blowing southward and not right toward us. It is supposed to get windy again over night. We'll see. I think we'll be OK.
Despite 0 percent containment, no structures have burned. Two firemen were caught in a wind shift and are hospitalized on ventilators with severe burns.

Tells you the sheer intensity of these things.

About 8 inches of snow fell at the Cameron Peak fire just after Labor Day and then it blew up again into the largest fire in the state's recorded history.

The CA Butte fire, the state's largest ever, has been burning since August 17.

Now if you want to sell skeptics on the idea of climate change, THIS is how you do it:

40 inches of snow in Binghamton. Watching some of the time lapse videos on YouTube. That would cover my back deck to the railing.

I used to work with a girl from Binghamton who would brag about the weather there. Just leaving it out there.
