    Whatever you do, stick with city/county-run humane societies and beware of private 'not for profit' organizations that claim to be 'rescues' or 'shelters'.

    We learned our lesson the hard way last month.

    Here's Hank, our 'rescued' Golden, active and adorable when we adopted him for $450 on Dec. 12:

    What followed suddenly was a week of pathetic misery (and $900 in vet fees), and now that poor sick boy is no longer among the living. (Parvo.)
