The Independent Mail in Anderson, SC, is looking for a lead reporter/editor for its weekly Clemson University sport publication, Orange and White and OrangeandWhite.com.

This motivated individual would work in the specialty publications division of the advertising department and be the primary writer and principal editor for this weekly, 16-page tabloid that’s the definitive weekly voice in the Upstate for Clemson sports.

The Orange and White lead reporter also will need to develop a stable of freelance writers and photographers to help cover Clemson sports. In addition to reporting and coordinating freelancers, the Orange and White lead also plans out each week’s edition and works with a design studio to lay out, edit and produce the section, while also maintaining web content at orangeandwhite.com and serving as a leading voice about all things Clemson sports for the Independent Mail.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape Orange and White’s coverage of major college sports, including following a National Champion football team.

The qualified candidate will have: At least five years of experience covering sports, some experience managing a freelance budget and working with freelance reporters or photographers, and an extensive knowledge of college sports. This position also demands a flexible schedule and the ability to balance multiple tasks at one time.

The Orange and White lead reporter is based at the Independent Mail in Anderson, a short drive away from Greenville and the Upstate South Carolina mountains.

Just did some research on this, looks like the Independent Mail just axed 75 percent of its sports department. Had three beat writers covering Clemson, now it sounds like they want a guy who oversees the publication and coordinates with freelancers. Doesn't sound like an exciting opportunity

They just let go of two good writers and had another leave right before, possibly in hopes of saving one of the others.

    ... This is trash.

I don't understand this business we're in. Shit like this makes no sense to me.

They dumped the job off to the advertising department, which means it won't come out of the newsroom budget.

That's all that counts now. Fuck the readers.
