Clemens apologizes for being naughty

Last week, Hardin and Clemens denied any sexual contact:
Contacted by the Daily News Sunday through his lawyer Rusty Hardin, Clemens confirmed a long-term relationship but denied that it was of a sexual nature.

"He flatly denies having had any kind of an inappropriate relationship with her," Hardin said. "He's considered her a close family friend. ... He has never had a sexual relationship with her."

    Which was yet another lie.

And yet there's people on this board who still defend Clemens? Exactly how many lies do you have to hear?

So while they're playing Hearts or Cribbage or whatever, do you think they're talking about the future?

15-2, 15-4, 15 is too young *** three years until we get busy.

I'm not defending Clemens, just saying that there's absolutely no proof, whatsoever, of his having a sexual relationship with McCready when she was underage. In fact, NOBODY is suggesting that such a thing happened. So, what you're left with is a star athlete who had numerous extramarital affairs. If you want to judge the way the man leads his life, knock yourselves out, but there's no existing allegation of illegality.

"I realize that many people want me to simply confess and apologize for the conduct that I have been accused of, but I cannot confess to, nor apologize for, things I did not do. I have apologized to my family for my mistakes. And having offered this apology to the public, I would ask that you let me and my family deal with these matters in private."

    Huh?

  5. Cranberry - I'm amazed at how willfully obtuse you can be. A 28-year old baseball star has a 15-year old in his hotel room alone late at night and your viewpoint is nothing to see here - move along? Yeah I can see why you think this is not news. Is your byline Officer Barbrady by any chance?

The Red Sox teams of the late 80's had perhaps the best talent in baseball but issues like infidelity may have kept that team from meeting the expectations. Yet the general sports public is kept from this information because people like you decide to be Sergeant Shultz "I see nothing." 1988 is when this "relationship" with a 15-year old started between Clemens and McCreedy. 1988 is also the year that Wade Boggs affair with Margo Adams helped tear the Red Sox clubhouse apart. These things are potentially linked to on the field performance but I'd never expect to learn that from someone like yourself who wants to be the arbiter of what is news and what is not.

Wade Boggs may have Delta Force videos of Clemens and McCreedy for all we know. Yes - people like me are left to speculate because the people with access like you decided that omerta was the path of least resistance long ago.

Oh there's proof, the question is whether you want to believe it or not.

    (1) You have a 28yr old married man with 2 kids who brings a 15yr old to his hotel room. This is confirmed by all sides.

    (2) Then you have a confirmed affair which spanned at least 10 years.

    (3) You have an initial vehement denial; when there was no confirmation.

    (4) Now you have an admission that something occurred with an apology; but only after confirmation by Ms. McCready.

There are strong facts present. The only question is whether you will believe that Clemens kept it in his pants for 3 years. Remember now, in our history, men have been sent to the electric chair with much less "facts."

Been said by several people... but this isn't a random athlete's private sexual life being picked on, a la A Rod. And I'd argue that A Rod wasn't "random"; it came with being a superstar and having the biggest contract. Sucks for him, but it comes with the fame and money of being A Rod. It's just a fact of his life. If it was Miquel Cairo or Kyle Farnsworth, no one cared.

Clemens was in the Mitchell Report. He denied what the report said vehemently. Tape recorded that conversation with McNamee, played all kinds of games with the truth and looked bad in the process. His friend "misremembered." His wife, who has played the image game too, then gets tossed under his HGH bus. Then he filed a defamation of character suit and held himself up as a family man in front of Congress -- made HIS character an issue when he did that. And now he's getting skewered with it. It has nothing to do with who he has (or in the case of Clemens, apparently more like who he hasn't) slept with. It has everything to do with the firestorm surrounding this guy and how much of it has been self-inflicted by stupidity and hubris. It was a good get by the Daily News and it is legit news.

Also, the comparison to Jason Giambi earlier in the thread about the apology without saying what it is for... Just not the same thing. Giambi could have had his contract challenged by the Yankees if he admitted his steroid use. Maybe he should have cleansed his soul, said, "I am a fraud," and walked away from a boatload of money... or maybe he did what a lot of people of people would have done; not jeopardized a great career and a ridiculous contract. Not arguing what the right thing to do was; just saying you have to be able to understand the reasons he was so squirrelly. Clemens is under no obligation to fess up to screwing around on his wife. But if he actually did just say it, what would the ramifications have been that made that kind of "apology" necessary? His career is done. THAT isn't going to effect his HOF eligibility. The two just don't look the same to me.

There's still adultery (with at least three women) and lies to cover it up, which puts his character and his honesty in question. I would say that's something.

Agree that's "something," Oz. But it also is something that applies to thousands of professional athletes.
And there are still many here implying or believing that he's guilty of statutory rape, of which there is not a shred of proof.

While in office Bob Dole refused to travel alone with women on his staff to avoid even the slightest whiff of impropriety.

(Don't know how he's doin' since Viagra.)
