You're insane if you think Jackson's a better town than Starkville. Jackson is Shreveport without casinos.

And Shreveport sucks even WITH casinos.

Rusty is indeed one of the good guys out there and he's battling dragons every day, with success.

Ole Miss is a tremendously important beat for that newspaper and their current editorial approach suggests the right writer will be getting his or her fair share of 1A stories to boot.

Funny, though, I don't see where anyone had seized upon the most interesting word in the whole ad. In the first sentence...

I caught it. That's why I posted Rusty's comments from another post.

Yes it is. But Starkville is Starkville.

Starkville had to be the most dull college town I've ever been to. You have a university, a chilis and a ruby tuesday's. Central Oklajoma in Edmond, Okla. is more exciting, and I'm not talking because OKC is right there, I mean suburbia Edmond.

There are plenty of good-to-excellent local/regional places to eat and drink in Starkville if you know where to look. (And if you didn't, you should have asked someone).

But I realize it's fashionable to trash Starkville on this board, and nothing I (or my good pal Blitz) can say will change that. Whatever ...

There are good local places in Starkville, yes. But if you dig deep enough in any dull college town, you can find a good time, good food and something unique that's probably tied to the university.

But I'm not here to bash Starkville. That would be piling on.

  10. I've actually always enjoyed my time in Starkville. If you can't find some place fun to drink or hang out, you're not looking hard enough.

Although Oxford is more aesthetically pleasing, it loses points for its fratty douchebag ratio and extremely early bar closing times.

Jackson, on the other hand, is among the most dysfunctional and depressing cities I've ever spent time in.

Never forget driving back from some assignment and listening to a radio broadcast of an LSU-Mississippi State football game. LSU was winning something like 42-0 in the third quarter. The LSU radio guys made mention of the State fans streaming toward the exits, and the sideline guy busts in with, "Where are the going!? It's Starkville!"
    Kind of funny.

That said, the Ole Miss and Mississippi State beats at the CL are both plum gigs. They're the paper's top two sports beats and both of them really drive their coverage. Like someone else said, you'll even have your fair share of A1 stories with this beat.
Even if you don't view this as a permanent assignment, so many folks have gone straight from there to major gigs elsewhere that you'd be a fool not to consider it.

Curious, Matt, how many times have you been to Starkville? Recall you stating you did a broadcast there.
