    Hopefully not a D_B.

    http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/30/asia/china.php

"Water quality has been a concern for the sailing events, given that many coastal Chinese cities dump untreated sewage into the sea. At the same time, rivers and tributaries emptying into coastal waters are often contaminated with high levels of nitrates from agricultural and industrial runoff. These nitrates contribute to the red tides of algae that often bloom along sections of China's coastline."

I know a little bit about science, not much, but to have algae growing in salt water like this takes a little bit of doing.

Basically, algae is a fecal colorform indicator.

    You know, crap.

That Chinese police force is sure something. This guy brought a knife to a gunfight -- and won! That is, if this story is to be believed:

    Yang.

Should be easy to figure out who this guy is. Can't be more than 5 million of them in China.

That story makes no sense. The guy lives in Beijing, which is an over 1-hour flight to Shanghai, yet went to Shanghai to launch an attack on police?

Also, many police over there do not carry guns. Guns are not legal. The only police that have them are those that deal more militarily.

We have several athletes from this podunk town actually heading to the games. I just spoke with the track club's coach, who visited China six weeks before the IOC announced China as the winner. Even back then, he saw people SPRAY PAINTING DIRT GREEN in order to create the illusion of grass.

At least, it's an insane level of blue-green algae (which is actually a cyanobacteria that produces oxygen).

It's now almost as if the North Pole would have been a better choice.

Is there any question now that communism (especially a government as committed to nationalistic aims as China) & the environment don't mix?
