Chiefs Hire Charlie Weis As New O-Coordinator

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by KevinmH9, Jan 6, 2010.

  1. Typical NFL back scratching. And the players and fans are the ones who get screwed by the incompetence sure to come. He wasn't even that great of an offensive coordinator in New England. He wasn't coming back in 2005.

Belichick ran the show. Weis was a towel boy.

Saw the point earlier on another thread that the Chiefs' best player is a running back, which makes this hire make even less sense.

Their quarterback is a guy who had his one successful year in the Patriots' system, which is pretty much what we will see from Weis. The Chiefs aren't going anywhere any time soon if they don't get better production out of Cassel. A running back can succeed in that system, especially one who is also a dangerous receiver out of the backfield.

Now if Weis is going to be stupid enough or stubborn enough not to give Charles the ball enough, then this was a bad hire. But I wouldn't go dismissing coaches or assistants just based on the current personnel on any team. That was the concern when Mike Tomlin took over in Pittsburgh, that he was a 4-3, Tampa 2 Zone guy and the Steelers were built to play an attacking, 3-4 defense. Tomlin was smart enough to adapt and the result was a Super Bowl last year.

Weis is probably smart enough to adapt. Humble enough? We'll see if he learned anything from his failure at Notre Dame.

I agree that you don't hire a coach based on current personnel (particularly when current personnel net you a 4-12 record). I'm just not sure Weis is smart (or humble) enough to adapt to anything.
