Dammit, I WANT the President of the United States to know more than I do. I WANT him to be smarter than I am. In fact, I'd like it if he were one of the smartest muh-fuhs in the whole damn country.

Maybe I should have clarified that -- in terms of foreign relations and complicated economic matters, maybe it would help having a genius on board. But too many presidential candidates and other elected officials want to tell us how to raise our children, what we can or can't eat, drink or smoke, what we can or can't have on our DVD players, and what we can or can't teach our children, or what we can or can't have them taught in public schools.

I don't need Al Gore lecturing me on being green or Hilary telling me it takes a village to raise my kid.

This begs the question, jg... How is it that you can get the best bagels, best slices of pizza, best paella, etc... even great pierogies in NYC... but you can't find a burrito worth a damn anywhere (although some of the Mexican places do a decent margarita)? NYC gets every ethnic group and nationality known to mankind and the good food follows. But we don't get Mexicans, by and large. Why is that? When I lived in Chicago, they had kick-ass, authentic Mexican restaurants that made me realize what a burrito is. How is it that large groups of Mexicans made their way all the way to Chicago, but when it came time to plan a relocation to someplace far from Mexico, Chicago seemed like a great idea but NYC didn't? This question has plagued my whole adulthood.

The demography of the burrito diaspora has vexed me, too. And for years I've had to wander joyless in our metropolitan wilderness. Whither the genuine taco? The pure-D enchilada con queso? The museum-quality tamale?

Sure we've got great Cuban and authentic Bolivian and magnificent Puerto Rican - to say nothing of Punjabi luncheonettes by Punjabis for Punjabis, and fine foods of a thousandthousand other lands and cultures - but where could I go for the simple ecstasies of a well-tempered arroz con frijoles?

Puebla Mexican. 1st Avenue and 1st Street. East Village. A one-room turqouise dump to which we've taken Los Angelenos and Texans and photojournalists recently returned from, yes, Mexico City. All agree. Best Mexican food in New York. By far. Get the hardshell tacos.
