I got to hang out with Charlie for a half hour after a benefit show he did for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund several years back. He played Devil Went Down to Georgia twice that night and as far as I'm concerned he could have played that and nothing else for two hours. It still wouldn't have gotten old.

Add the fact that Nolan Ryan was his co-host for the benefit and it still ranks as one of the best assignments of my life. After all, I really became a baseball fan watching Nolan pitch for my hometown Astros in the 1980s. It remains the one time I was tempted to ask a source for an autograph.

I've seen Charlie 3 times live and the song that always brings the house down is "The South's Gonna Do It Again"

This is pretty funny. Charlie has the same trouble on his site:

First of all let me thank everybody for reading and commenting on this
column and I want you to know that your responses are not edited out because you disagree with me, in fact, far from it.

But Bruce is being accused of playing favorites in what he allows and
disallows to appear in the comment section. Bruce is not playing favorites at all, he's only going by the ground rules and for those of you who don't know here they are.

    1. I will not have my readers subjected to foul language. It's just as easy
to write your opinions without the garbage.

    2. We will not allow personal vendettas to be carried on in this column. If
you want to insult somebody do it on their private address.

    3. We do not advertise products and events unless it's something I write
    about in the soapbox.

    4. Threats to anyone are promptly turned over to the F.B.I.

This column and forum is intended to promote ideas and opinions, pro or con and email responses are only edited for the causes listed above.

Sorry fellas. I'll pop in a Toby Keith CD so you can hear something that suits your taste.

  11. Not to pollute this with politics, but I just want to point out - and I think this is fair and civil and in bounds - that Charlie is just right of Spiro Agnew and everybody on this site loves him. Not to overanalyze, but I'm wondering sometimes if our meters have less to do with ideology and more to do with authenticity, whatever someone may believe. Just thinking out loud.

The man beat the devil in a fiddle contest. Everything from there is gravy.
