He knows enough to not have to look at a spreadsheet to know if a guy can play defense or not.

You wouldn't know which way to hold a spreadsheet.

Much much later and playing a very different role. And in the intervening years, he (or somebody) looked at the advanced stats and said, "quit taking crazy shots, quit giving up 40 a night on defense, and quit throwing the ball away."

Is that what you think is happening?

The ones I create I type into.

I almost never print them out.

Do you think they didn't know a gunner when they saw one before someone divided shots attempted by games played?

Fro a guy who works in education you sure seem to hate information. That's all analytics are.

Chuck got trolled by Morey and took the bait. Chuck gonna Chuck.

But is Chuck wrong? Basketball is much less complex than, say, baseball. Often the eyeball test is enough.

Maybe we shouldn't even keep points and rebounds.

Doesn't matter. I often quote Steven Goldman who I read saying that stats are your eyes when you're not there. No one watches all games for all teams, so we make our evaluations based on the random sampling that we see. That's why people always overrate their hometown stars. Just as true for basketball as baseball.

I'm intrigued by the idea that basketball is less complex than baseball. I'd argue just the opposite.
