This might be a little bit West Coast for some. Cathy Seipp is a conservative media critic who used to write a lot about the L.A. Times, and I used to read and enjoy her stuff all the time. She got some great inside info. She also writes for the National Review online, and does op-ed for various places.

Well, she has been fighting hard against lung cancer -- never a smoker -- and apparently, the fight is near its end. Her daughter posts here on top of her blog:

Never met her; we exchanged e-mails once. Anyway, I was a fan, and others might know of her, too.

She used to do a snarky LA Times column for the old Buzz Magazine, which was kind of like Spy meets Los Angeles Magazine. It was always the first thing I turned to when my Buzz arrived -- yes, I was a subscriber.

I didn't really peg her as conservative. Her takes on the Times were usually dead-on, but I lost track of her after Buzz folded.

Hate hearing stories like this. Really do.

That's a self-peg by her. If you read down through some of her blog postings, you'll see where she comes down on a lot of issues, and how she identifies with conservatives.

I loved the Buzz column on the Times as well; if we didn't get the magazine itself, it didn't take long for copies of her stuff to make their way around the various offices.

It's well worth following the link to Cathy's blog (as provided above by SF Express) and reading the comments. You can tell how Cathy touched her family, friends and readers, even those she had never met. It's a life well-lived. We should all do so well in touching our communities.

As a former West Coaster and native of SoCal, this is sad. Sorry to hear this. RIP.
