So Catholic dogma in fungible depending on circumstances? So the medical insurance it carries for its nonCatholic employees cannot have contraceptives because it infringes on a Catholic belief , but if it will save the church some money, they're willing to disregard their beliefs?

Their loving forgiveness pedophile priests and their refusal to give communion to legislators who vote for abortion rights are reconcilable?

So, to paraphrase some Catholics, hate the church, love the congregants.

And I'll lock this thread for sure:

Catholicism is cult, just a very big, very rich cult.

Except Buffett did volunteer to pay more by offering to match dollar-for-dollarwhatever the GOP congressmen put in. Only one guy did.

Not defending them at all (I've left the church for some of the reasons you implicate), just pointing out the reality of the situation.

The hypocrisy isn't with the legality of the argument. It's with the church shamelessly backing off its professed morality when it suits them to do so. They complain loudly and publicly about the legality of abortion. They piss and moan that the law might compel them to go so far as to offer contraception to their employees, despite the fact that they already did. All of this was based on the argument that life is sacred, fetuses are people and sex is just for reproduction.

Now they're passionately arguing the exact opposite, just because they stand to lose a buck. Rank hypocrites.

This really comes down to a medical, legal and business decision made by doctors, lawyers and business people. And yes it's hypocritical of what the organization claims to stand for. Still, I doubt the church had much if any say in it, although as it gains press it will. If that happens don't be surprised if the stance changes or they change how things operate at this hospital or within CHI.

The Church is the client, if they do not want to make a legal argument that is squarely contrary to a core religious belief, then their lawyers will not make it.

Besides, shouldn't a Catholic Hospital be held to their professed belief that a fetus is a person. Shouldn't a Catholic Hospital offer care to a fetus in accordance with their beliefs?

Nah, just rank hypocrites out to make a buck, avoid property taxes and continue to amass the greatest accumulation of world wide wealth since the height of the Roman Empire.

What's more, they're missing an opportunity here. They spend money to advance other moral causes the church believes in. Why not this one? Why not settle with the family and make a big show of their principles, that they'd rather spend the money than compromise their beliefs?

If the Church would sell a couple of paintings in the Vatican warehouse they could fund parochial schools in Africa for 50 years. But they won't. The Catholic Church holds nothing as dear as money or tanglible assets.
