Casper Star-Tribune (Casper, Wyo.)

Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by philly fanatic, Apr 5, 2007.

  1. Get Into The Game

Wyoming's leading newspaper is looking for a versatile, motivated sports journalist to complete a talented staff. Few newspapers our size offer the growth opportunities you'll find at the Casper Star-Tribune. Two of our hires in the past three years earned APSE writing awards their first year out of college and advanced to Division I beats. Our new vacancy has arisen because one of our writers unexpectedly got snatched up by a bigger paper. (He’ll be covering Duke, North Carolina and North Carolina State.) Your beat in Wyoming will be a little bit of everything, including professional indoor football and minor league baseball. Though we have full-time writers for our University of Wyoming beats, our other reporters regularly write sidebars from those events. Casper is also host to the College National Finals Rodeo, and you'll pitch in with that week-long effort, as well. Our statewide circulation of 30,000 makes us the most prominent media voice in the Cowboy State. Our sports section has won 17 APSE awards since 1995, including six for 2004. We're looking for someone to help us build on that excellence. The job will include reporting and desk duties, depending on the time of year. Quark experience will set you apart from other candidates. You'll need a bachelor's degree, excellent verbal skills, a willingness to continually improve as a writer and page designer, and strong attention to detail. Meanwhile, you'll live and play amid Wyoming's outdoor splendor. We're about a four-hour drive north of Denver. We offer an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, vision 401(k) retirement, employee stock purchase plan, paid holidays and vacation. We are an equal opportunity employer. Apply online with cover letter explaining why you're the right person for the job, along with your resume, reference list and work samples by April 15, at www.casperstartribune.net or apply-to.com/Job2807324 or mail to David Mayberry, Sports Editor, Casper Star-Tribune, P O Box 80, Casper WY 82602.

  2. Sounds like a pretty impressive track record. Discuss.

They had an opening not too long ago. Did they never fill it, or did someone else leave?

Life in Casper is probably a nice step up from life in Pocatello, but without a college in town.

This ad is a reposting, and it's a bit dated. It's from a while back.

The most recent job posting for the Star-Tribune was not filled. Lots of quality applicants, just none that could be here soon.

Still, this is a good spot to start for someone who wants to move up. You will learn how to write on deadline, that I can assure you. Writers who started here within the past 10 years have moved on to pro beats in Colorado and major college beats in Big Ten and ACC country.

Casper can feel isolated if you're used to the big city. But Casper does have minor league baseball, indoor football and hosts almost every state high school tournament. There's also the College National Finals Rodeo.

Housing here is affordable, gas is cheap when compared to the rest of the country, and the city's first Starbucks just opened across town. A city on the grow....

PM me if you want more.

So . . . those without quark experience probably shouldn't even bother applying?
