  1. Actually, for about 50 years now, it's been considered to be one of the deftest, wittiest screenplays ever.
    But, do carry on. The professional-contrarian opinion is always a joy.

    Sadly, people just weren't that smart from 1942-57.

    I think I read it's because they didn't get enough vitamins or folic acid or something during the Depression.

    Fact.

    The Big Sleep is the ultimate triumph of style over substance. It looks great, and the set pieces are terrific. Can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Remember . . . even Raymond Chandler
    was unclear in his own mind in terms of just how all those pieces were supposed to fit together.

    Ingrid B. thought Casablanca was junk. She remains in the distinct minority, today.
