Agreed. And not just because I would go to sporting events in France just to sing the anthem.

Although it did give me a flash to my favorite version of La Marselliaise

The end of Kelly's Heroes as they are riding into town...
    (from memory)
    Maitland: They think you're DeGaulle!
General (Carroll O'Connor): DeGaulle? Hell, he ain't even in this war. Victory! Viva Les Americans!

No question, Casablanca is the best movie ever made.

    My favorite line:

UGARTE: You despise me, don't you Rick?

RICK: If I gave you any thought I probably would.

    Other great ones:

LOUIS: I often wonder why you came to Casablanca.

RICK: I came here for the waters.

LOUIS: Waters? What waters? We're in the desert.

    RICK: I was misinformed.

    One more:

RICK: If it's December, 1941 in Casablanca, what time is it in New York?

SAM: I don't know. My watch broke.

Got it on DVD. May just pop it into the machine tonight (after House, of course).

  8. I don't mind a parasite. I do object to a cut rate one.

Lorre's appearance was all too brief . ..

There's a great book called "Round Up the Usual Suspects" that is the definitive behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made. Goes into great detail about the writing process. Some serious collaboration there. Here's a link to it on Amazon:

Vive la (Effing) France on the dueling anthems scene. Goosebump city.

Great point, Guess Who. For Casablanca fans, that book is a must read.

    Other great lines:

"You want my advice? Go back to Bulgaria?"

Rick: "This gun is aimed at your heart."
Louis: "That is my least vulnerable spot.''

German: "Can you imagine us in New York City?"
Rick: "There are some areas of New York I would advise you not to invade.''

I was fortunate enough to see Casablanca for the first time on a big screen in a sold-out Uptown Theater in Mpls. It was the 50th anniversary reprint. I had no idea it would be so funny, so smart and still stand up as something more than nostalgia.

    Another great scene:

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Louis: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
    Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Louis: Oh, thank you very much.
