Even as a Red Sox fan, I think he makes some valid points. Have Sox fans become the most obnoxious in sports? I say Yankee fans still wear the crown, but I can understand why others would feel differently.

Yankees fans still are the gold standard, but it doesn't change the fact that Red Sox Nation has become insufferably annoying. They've managed to piss away the goodwill created in 2004 in less than three years. Congrats.

Good points, but closing on Yankee fan is Notre Dame Fan and Dallas Cowboys fan, who were born insufferable. Mediocrity can't even knock the I-word off of them.

I'm a Sox fan, so I suppose I'm bred to think Yankees fans are the most annoying and obnoxious, but I can see how many of my fellow Red Sox fans would piss people off. Unfortunately, the Sox have their own bandwagon fans who jumped on only because it was trendy to do so.

I detest any fanbase that calls itself (fill in team name here) Nation.

I'm puzzled by Cowboys fans being on the list. Sure, the Dallas Cowboys team is hated by many, but Cowboys fans? Not exactly in-your-face or intense. More like bandwagonners. Irritating, I suppose...but obnoxious? I don't see it. The franchise, sure, but not the fans.

Good piece by Caple. I enjoyed the Red Sox while attending college in the area, but I was never fond of the bitchiness and negativity of the Boston fans. I haven't been to New England since the 04 victory, so I have no idea what the post-04 Sox fans are like. None around these parts, for all practical purposes.

Just wait till the Leafs win the Cup.

Except for Beef and Flash, Leafs Nation will be 35 million strong. :)

I sit next to a Red Sox honk, and I definitely vote they have become the most obnoxious in sports. Took the title a long time ago.

The freakiest thing I remember about Sox fans is that some of them didn't think I had a RIGHT to cheer for the Sox since I wasn't from New England. Like you have to be born into it, you can't become naturalized by living there.

I come from a provincial part of the country, but it's not an "us against the world" kind of provincialism where I'm from. It's more of a "grocery store cashier gets really puzzled and asks you lots of questions if you buy something weird like soy milk or tahini" kind of provincialism. No one's going to challenge your right to cheer for the local sports team.

    Obviously Mason Nation is excepted.

But yes, Sox fans have become brutally obnoxious. And I think most of the worst ones think Manny, Ortiz, and Pap were on the '86 team too. Not that they'd know any better.

My heart is black enough to detest both Red Sox Nation and (fill in Chicago sports team) Nation.
