Paul Henderson and the white and red No. 19 sweater - together again.

Nearly 40 years after Henderson last saw the sweater he wore when he scored the most famous goal in hockey history, the retired NHLer is scheduled to hold it in his hands again Monday ahead of a high-profile auction later this month.

Just to clarify, those teeth belonged to the Ted Kennedy for whom everyone had a use and a good word. :)

So bidding is now up to $232,323.00:

The Canucks have joined forces instead of driving the price up in a bidding war. Sucks for the Yank who owns the jersey:

I'm still thinking there's a mega-wealthy former Dirty Commie who will bid. We'll see.

Interesting to note not all Canucks support bidding for the jersey:

A host of people think the Canadian government should step in and rescue it from its American seller

Goes on to say there are other significant collectibles from the Summit Series:

Why wouldn’t Henderson’s stick, which sits in the Hockey Hall of Fame, be just as valuable? Or, for that matter, how about Bobby Clarke’s stick? I’m talking about the one he used to break Valeri Kharlamov’s ankle. You could argue that was as responsible for Canada’s great win as Henderson’s goal.

There are some solid points in that column. We need arenas, whether new or refurbished, and we need to find ways to make hockey and ice time more affordable for people, especially children, who want to play.

Private funds should be used to buy the jersey. Hard to justify public monies being spent. At least to me.

After 29 bids we are up to $309,224.00.

Ted Kennedy's teeth are getting action, too. 8 Bids and now stands at $245.00.

The federal government has a programme which allocates funds to purchase historical Canadian artifacts. It's hard to argue that this sweater doesn't qualify.

It belongs in the HHOF and there's no guarantee that any private collector would donate it.

I've read articles and I know where the money would come from. I don't think the jersey is something that should be bought using federal funds. That's not a shot at what 1972 means to Canada.

There should be enough money between the Canadaian group to do this deal and not have to tap government funds.

Less than 12 hours left until bidding closes and still holding at $309,224.00.

Maybe we could take up a sj.canuck collection. :)

As long as Esposito isn't involved I'll send you guys a donation.

Did you look at some of the other collections? More stuff from 1972, including a puck.

I'm thinking the last couple of hours of bidding will get interesting.
