Canadian Tire bids $200,000 for Paul Henderson's '72 Team Canada Jersey

News of the auction is over at one of the hockey sites but this is pretty interesting

Canadian Tire, the huge Canadian retailer who is as iconic as Tim Horton's in Canuckistan, has bid $200,000 on the Henderson jersey.

Paul Henderson (for those who don't know) scored what is still the most famous goal in Canadian hockey history.

He won game 8 and the tournament against the Soviets, with 34 seconds left to go in a series that started off as "friendly" and quickly turned into a street fight.

"If successful in securing the jersey for Canadians, Canadian Tire will take the jersey on tour in every corner of the country through its 480 store network and make it available for the public to see. Following the cross-country tour, Canadian Tire will offer the jersey on a long-term loan basis to leading sports and hockey museums including the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame for the benefit of all Canadians."

I suspect the bidding will go up over $300,000, maybe even half a million. It's the Shroud of Turin for Canadian hockey fans.

Was it here or somewhere else that I read the Canadian government was considering getting involved financially?

    Mr R,

I can't bring myself to make the obvious joke about Sandy McTire here.

So if this a true open bidding process and the highest bidder takes possession of the jersey, what happens if the highest bidder is from outside Canada?

What if the former Dirty Commies get their hands on it?

Another question I have is does Stapleton still have the puck?

Apparently Stapleton still has the puck.

    From his Wiki page:

In 2008 Pat brought the puck that Paul Henderson fired into the net to win the 1972 Summit Series with the Russians to a Sarnia Legionnaires game. He dropped it at a ceremonial faceoff being held to honour Legionnaire founder Tommy Norris. He told the Sarnia Observer that he had the puck on his stick when the buzzer sounded to end the series. He was about to shoot it down the ice when he suddenly paused and picked it up.

    Did Henderson keep the stick?

That might be part of the HHOF exhibit.

I wonder if Balsillie or someone along those lines would buy the jersey and donate it to the exhibit?

    And we're off:

No sooner had Canadian Tire registered a $200,000 auction bid on Thursday to buy Paul Henderson’s jersey from the 1972 Canada-Soviet hockey series than an unidentified rival had upped the ante by $11,000, signalling the apparent start of a serious bidding war for the artifact in an online sale that still has almost three weeks to go.

    Holy crap!

We can buy Ted Kennedy's false teeth!

    d Kennedy's Partial Dental Plate

Teeder's teefers! Definitely unique, this partial plate appears to be in fine condition to us, although we're not denturists. Five pearly whites run across the partial, no doubt replacements for teeth...
