Can Dara Torres have her own thread?

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Lugnuts, Jul 6, 2008.

  1. That's my next point. While there are obvious exceptions, childbirth is not "traumatic" as someone else said earlier. It's a natural occurance. The body adapts and regroups.

    I think if there's any obvious indicator that she is doping it's her age - 41 - not childbirth. Aging is a lot more "traumatic" on the body. No matter how much training you do, you're body is going to give in at some point.

    Uhhh yeah... being sarcastic toward the idea of childbirth traumatizing the body to a point where an Olympic athlete would be toast as an Olympic athlete (certainly in an individual, timed sport).

    I understood the sarcasm.

  3. Why ruin a good thread with uncalled-for name calling?

    Puhhhlease.

    Sarcasm is belittling, an insult.

    You get what you pay for.

  5. Whatever, Simon.

    RE: Find me world-class athletes who performed better after childbirth.

    Margaret Court Smith - won three of the four Grand Slam singles and doubles tournaments a year after giving birth

    Wilma Rudolph - 3 gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics after giving birth
    Nancy Lopez - LPGA player of the year after giving birth
    Paula Radcliffe - won NYC marathon after giving birth and still going
    Joy Fawcett - won a World Cup title and Olympic gold after giving birth
    Lisa Leslie
    Jennie Finch - we'll see

    Oh I guess Lindsay Davenport -- a member of this summer's U.S. Olympic team ... and how about Australia's Margaret Court Arena, who, as a mother, won a many of the women's majors in the 70s ...

    Valerie Lafon Gotay is a 34-year-old mother of two girls. She will compete in the Olympics in Beijing in judo 16 years after first qualifying for the Olympics at 18.

    I guess we'll see this winter how Sarah Schleper, three-time skiing Olympian, handles becoming a mother.

    Oh yeah ... a gal named Fanny Blankers-Koen won four medals at the 1948 Olympics, becoming the first mother to compete at the Olympics. She was mother of two ... and pregnant at the Olympics.

    There's also:
    * Two-time Olympic gold medalist softball catcher Stacey Nuveman
    * Three-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie (who won her first Olympic gold medal in 1996)
    * Track star LaShinda Demus
    * Melanie Roach, seven-time weightlifting national champion
    * Pitcher Jennie Finch
    * U.S. soccer players Kate Markgraf and Christie Rampone

    There's a great book called Atta Girl! A Celebration of Women in Sport that I think you should probably look into reading.
